Part 1 - Assessing The Business

In this module, you will use basic tools to evaluate financial results. Before you invest, you should investigate the income statement, the statement of shareholders equity, the statement of cash flows, and the balance sheet.

All The Tools You Need To Evaluate a Business Effectively

We will answer questions such as:

  • How do you determine whether your business is making or losing money?
  • How does the company’s earnings performance compare with that of previous years?
  • Am I going to receive a dividend this year?
  • Does the company rely primarily on debt or stockholders’ equity to finance its assets?
  • Can the company meet its near-term obligations?
  • Can the company meet its long-term obligations?
  • Does the company generate sufficient cash from operations to fund its investing activities?
  • How much cash did the company generate to expand operations, pay off debts, or distribute dividends?
  • And then we will get into the most important question of all; Should I invest in this business?

Part 2 - Deep Dive Into Financial Statements

Part 3 - Six Numbers Every Investor Must Know

The six foundational concepts needed to understand how the investment marketplace operates.

Six Numbers Every Investor Must Know

Use your hip.

When I first learn to play tennis and badminton, I was given this advice. When I learned to play golf, I was given the same advice.

There’s almost no sport or physical activity where that advice isn’t useful. Squash. Ping pong. Dancing.

The more likely it is that people are tempted to focus on their hands or feet, the more the hips really matter.

And you’ve already guessed the metaphor.

Moving beyond the novice level in investing requires a solid foundation. The biggest muscles are around the hips, just as the biggest leverage comes from our approach to return, risk, diversification, valuation, leverage and cost.

Instead of focusing on short-term noises, if you focus on your hip - (Six Numbers) - you will see more tangible improvement in your investment acumen.
