Go Beyond The Numbers - Assessing The Business

What this workshop is about?

This module is all about assessing the business from the perspective of an investor.
In business, accounting and financial statements are the means for communicating the numbers. If you don’t know how to read financial statements, you can’t really know the business that you are investing. In this module, you will use basic tools to evaluate financial results.

Before you invest, you should investigate the income statement, the statement of shareholders equity, the statement of cash flows, and the balance sheet. You would probably be most interested in the income statement because it tells about past performance and thus gives an indication of future performance. Then you are probably keen on the subject of dividends.
Plus how the company is getting and using its cash.
We will answer questions such as:
  • How do you determine whether your business is making or losing money?
  • How does the company’s earnings performance compare with that of previous years?
  • Am I going to receive a dividend this year?
  • Does the company rely primarily on debt or stockholders’ equity to finance its assets?
  • Can the company meet its near-term obligations?
  • Can the company meet its long-term obligations?
  • Does the company generate sufficient cash from operations to fund its investing activities?
  • How much cash did the company generate to expand operations, pay off debts, or distribute dividends?
  • And then we will get into the most important question of all; Should I invest in this business?
That should get you started on a good footing in assessing a business.

We emphasize learning through applications, practice, and repetition, not memorization. We hone, and re-hone concepts by the discussion of case examples, in which the focus is in hands-on analysis of the financial performance of a company, and not on debits/credits and the t-accounts.

In this module, I give you the foundational building blocks of the language of business and how to become a successful and profitable investor. You will be able to decipher and investigate businesses without becoming a victim of bogus advice and unsupported claims.

Upon successful completion of the course, you’ll be able to navigate the financial landscape with a lot less effort and risk. What that means is that you can finally take control of your financial future and get started on your path to a becoming a more consistent and rationale investor - away from the world of speculation and greed.
